I think we've concluded, at least for this list's discussion, that the 
fluttering over the finger hole is indeed an ornament and also would not 
sound the same or have the same overall purpose as vibrato. But, we've also 
sort of come to understand that, in klezmer, perhaps the vibrati was an 
ornament as well, as hinted at by Steve Greenman's approach, which is a very 
narrow trill-like, very quick ornament that serves as a point of emotion 
rather than the vibrato which would be more pervasive throughout a phrase. I 
think, personally, that there are such links to classical early music 
practice that carry over into folk traditions. After all, many of the 
musicians were the same musician, crossing over from classical to klezmer and 
back again. Well, maybe not back again....
