Re: Kol Isha

Good point. I am not against people discussing the issues raised by observance
or lack of observance of the Halacha of kol Isha.I object to the flippant tone
used in Trudi's post. Every time an issue like this comes up, people weigh in
on either side of the issue, as they should. But the minute it is pointed out
that some people take halachic mandates seriously, even if they do not match
their oen personal bias, there are too many people on this list who discount
bringing halachic observance into the discussion.
Is Kol Isha a man made interpretation of Ervah? Perhaps, but no part of
Halachic and Talmudic tradition ever claimed otherwise. In fact, the idea of
Rabbinic interpretation overriding Heavenly decrees is firmly entrenched in
Jewish tradition. one does not need the voice of God whispering in his or her
ear to decide what halacha requires.
I have no problem with anyone saying that halacha need not be interpreted in
the more restrictive fashion some choose. I have no problem with anyone saying
that they are personally uncomfortable with obsserving any or all halachot. I
draw the line when I am told that short of divine decree, halacha has no place
in the discussion if it infringes on someone's individual rights. It is not a
principal of Torah based Judaism that everyone's rights and biases are
protected and observed. Narrow mindedness is not necessarily a good thing, but
being part of a religious-social-nationalist group does sometimes cause one to
narrow their horizons. It is immature thinking and unrealistic to expect
otherwise.
