Re: Song Translation

Here's a translation of Rev Dovidl (transcribed into YIVO standard
orthography). BTW the subtitle of this Yiddish song on the sheet music
says "Hebrew Melody," so the confusion between these two labels has a long
and "honorable" history. It relates to the classic search for euphemisms
for the "J" word (Hebrew, Israelite, of the Mosaic faith...) to which
"Yiddish" bears too close a resemblance. Reminds me of Jan Peerce's album
called "Hebrew Melodies" which only contains one Aramaic number (Kol Nidre)
and the rest are all Yiddish songs.

Reb Dovidl, Reb Dovidl der Vasilkover
Voynt shoyn yetst in Talne
Reb Dovidl iz mit undz tsuzamen
Kumt shoyn gikher tsu zayn tish
Di toyre nit farzamen

         Reb Dovidl of Vasilkov
         Now lives in Talno
         Reb Dovidl is among us
         Come, hurry to his table
         Not to miss his Torah

Reb Dovidl, Reb Dovidl der Vasilkover
Voynt shoyn yetst in Talne
Tayere perl iz zayn toyre
Far undz di beste skhoyre

         Reb Dovidl of Vasilkov
         Now lives in Talno
Precious pearls are his Torah thoughts
         The best stuff for us
