Here's another example. At my wedding, the guy who carries my sound system
was a guest, so someone else send his guy to bring a sound system. That person
dropped a speaker on my trombonist's instrument, crushing it. His insurance
covered that damage, a serious replacement cost because it was an old
instrument and almost impossible to replace.

My lawyer goes one step further than suggesting liability--he suggests that
you incorporate your band as a separate business so that (as was so wisely
suggested by Mr. Reid) your house is not available to help settle a suit. It's
a nuisance and expense to file two sets of tax returns, but as you say, it's a
business, not a hobby, and there are other tax benefits if you file as a
not-for-profit.
