Re: Gnesin:The Jewish orchestra at the Ball

A case could be made that the beginning of the piece sounds a little like
"Vayiven Uzziyahu Migdalim..", however it continues with unrelated though
tantalizingly familiar snatches of Jewish motives. I listened to the audio
samples of all six pieces in the suite, and they're all charming and
familiar sounding but, again, original compositions. (As a matter of fact,
I liked the music so much that just bought one of the two discs available
at the Amazon URL ! Thanks for the link, Bob.)
Gnesin (or Gniessin, as he's sometimes spelled) came by his Jewish musical
chops honestly, being one of the members of the famed St. Petersburg
Society of Jewish Folk Music. He was the son of a rabbi and
a boy chorister with the famous cantor Eliezer Gerovitch.
