Re:: Where are you from?

Chag Same'ach to everyone...

I'm from Brooklyn NY... moved to Israel at age 5 and lived in Israel till after
serving in the army. Moved back to NY and have been living here since. My
father is a 6th generation Sabra (Israeli born) - half Sephardi and half
Ashkenazi... his Sephardi mother's family considered themselves "aristocratic",
and marrying an Ashkenazi (even if he was a Levy...) was looked down upon. They
spoke Ladino and were certainly very cultured... My mother's parents were
Russian immigrants who came to the lower east side in the 20's, although my
grandfather spent several years as a "Halutz" in Palestine... building roads
and getting malaria, like most of them did.

My grandparent are all deceased now... but I feel their presence when I compose
Jewish Liturgical music... and I'm not really sure how that works. There is an
"homage" to the musical flavors of Eastern Europe, the Sephardic, the Israeli
and of course American...

It's wonderful that we can share this with each other, and really get the sense
that we're all links in a long, amazing chain...

A zisn Peysach...
