If you have balance problems acoustically, then direct to two track can be
tricky. Record multitrack, and mix the quieter instruments up higher, or go
direct to two track (and tell them to just play louder already :-0). Just
kidding, I'm a string player myself.

It is a bit of a schlep. But you never know, maybe you like to ski too...
