I would add to this discussion that there are variations among
audiences. I'm thinking of Orthodox shuls in which we have performed.
In some the women in the band were specifically asked not to sing; in
others just not to solo. They have appreciated having both a woman
and a man available to each lead dancing in the gender-appropriate
circles.
