This whole Chag/Chagigah inquiry is not really relevant to the issue of
greetings. "Chag" is "holiday" in modern Hebrew, even if it's
Christmas. Chag Same'ach =usually= corresponds to Yiddish usage of Gut
Yontef, but not necessarily. As far as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the
traditional Yiddish greeting for =both= is Gut Yontef, so Chag Same'ach
makes perfect sense. As far as Chanukah, the classic Yiddish song calls it
"...a yontef a sheyner", but the greeting is never Gut Yontef, but A
Freylekhn Khanike. Ditto for Purim. (As the proverb says: Kadokhes is
nisht keyn krenk un purim iz nisht keyn yontef. [Fever is not a real
disease, and Purim is not a real holiday.] ) But that does not mean that
Chag Same'ach makes no sense.
Chag Same'ach.
