Hatikvah

My son and I are discussing Hatikvah and the fact that the Israelis sing,
"Hatikvah bat sh'not al payim".  We do not sing "bat".  Why not, since I've
been told it does not make sense the way we sing it.  I would also like to 
know if anyone knows which came first, with or without.
