Singing with playbacks can be quite dynamic. I have heard (pop) performers do 
very well with this.

BTW, it is not easy. If the music is not set up with obvious entry points for 
the singer, one could have problems as some friends encountered in a song 
contest. With no quick recovers, well ...

There are MIDI performance systems as well where the timing can be controlled 
but these respond to MIDI, i.e. a live keyboard player, not to the singer. The 
singer is a follower rather than the leader with such technology and this is 
the main problem here. Not an inyan of kosher or tref.
