thanks everybody for your input on this. i guess it's now mainly a question of
taste.personally, i'm not saying budget, because, like Mary, i'd also prefer
a lesser sound -produced by a smaller live group- over a huge, perfect sound,
augmented by prerecorded/MIDI, what have you. when i played in a duo on
cruiseships, we used prerecorded tracks, 3 synths and all. Nobody cared as they
all danced. That was 1987 and that was not "art", i don't think. I still use
the synth and its marvelous rhythms in the odd less paying private solo gig
when nobody knows my name too well. However, trying to play the synth at the
ashkenaz festival 6 years ago (old habit, i guess) was a definite "NO!", so i
was under the impression that our little corner of world music, at least in
major concert situations, did not go along with these developments elsewhere.

If I want to hear recorded music I'll buy a CD. What I want when I go to a
concert is LIVE music and I feel cheated when there's some taped stuff included
in the performance. I guess this sounds pretty blunt but I've been cheated a
few times now and don't like this growing trend. Give me live mistakes, a few
reed squawks and missed notes any day.
