Klezmer will have a place in Academia *if* you, or other like minded
individuals *have* a place in academia. Alan Atlas is an English Concertina
player. He has made a place in the academy for his instrument the Concertina
by his involvement with its history and practice, and his willingness to
apply himself to the education of the public in the instruments behalf. He
is also very involved with the study of other music and musical styles, is
much published and etc. Let your interests be your guide. Become involved
with musicology and publish on your pet topic. If thats what you want for
the music, fine. Me, I would be happy if the folks dance to it. (I won't be
granted a PHD in this life) SO, publish on the dance forms .Meanwhile ,
Avrahm Fried rules! Music needs a social function. It must remain relevant,
playing the music in a social context makes the music currently contextual.
A bride requests Firn De Mekhutonim, thats a success for the music, if the
Mekhutonim dance, now thats victory. Simon at Hatikva knows the numbers,
whats selling ,S.? The feet rule. The public needs their exercise!
Cordially, Al Watsky
