There are a variety of software programs that remove constant background
noise, such as wind noise on an outdoor recording or recording hiss from
vnyl. These programs vary widely in price and efficacy. A relatively
inexpensive one that I have used with some degree of success is Ray Gun
from Arboretum software. It will reduce background noise but not eliminate
it entirely. And it has to be used with a light touch or else some of the
high frequenecy range of the recorded material may be lost as well.
