The Old Broadway Synagogue, located 1/2 block east of Broadway between
125th and 126th St., is pleased to announce the initiation of its Upper
Upper West Side Jewish Music Series. Historic Old Broadway Synagogue--the
last orthodox Jewish congregation in Harlem--presents this concert series
with the goal of revitalizing the shul and its congregation.
The concerts will feature first-class Jewish musicians performing in a wide
array of Jewish musical styles. Entrance to all events will be only $10.00.
The first concert, MASTERS OF THE YIDDISH ART SONG, will feature baritone
Robert Abelson, tenor Bernard Fitch, and piano accompanist Mimi
Stern-Wolfe. The concert will be on Sunday, March 12th at 4:00 PM.
Cantor Robert Abelson and Bernard Fitch are recognized as two of the
world's premiere interpreters of Yiddish art song. Both singers have
appeared on world stages and with world-class orchestras. A colleague of
Yiddish art song composer Lazar Weiner (1897-1982), Abelson premiered over
twenty of Weiner's songs during the 1960s and 70s. He has officiated at
Temple Israel of the City of New York for over twenty years and also
teaches at the Hebrew Union College School of Sacred Music in New York
City. Bernard Fitch is currently a soloist with the Metropolitan Opera.
During the 1960s he served as cantor at the Raleigh Hotel in South
Fallsburg, NY and was also a colleague of Lazar Weiner.
The music to be performed will include Yiddish art songs composed by Lazar
Weiner as well as several members of the Society for Jewish Folk Music at
St. Petersburg, who were active in the early part of the twentieth century.
The second concert, WOMAN TO WOMAN, will feature Ladino and Hebrew songs
interpreted by the lovely voice of Ofri Eliaz. Ofri is a native Israeli who
studied at the Merkaz la-muzikah me-ha-Mizrach--a conservatory in Jerusalem
that specializes in traditional Sephardi music. Ofri will be accompanied on
the synthesizer by Orly Nachman-Netanel. This special Passover concert will
include other fun events and be presented on Monday, April 24th at 7:00 PM.
It will be a concert for women only.
The final concert this season will be a LAG B'OMER BLOWOUT, featuring
members of the Metropolitan Klezmer and Isle of Klezbos ensembles. What
better way to celebrate the end of this special day than with the
rip-roaring or heartfelt strains of klezmer music? These professional,
multi-talented musicians have played authentic klezmer for years throughout
the New York metro area and the rest of the country. The concert begins
Tuesday evening, May 23rd at 7:30 PM.
This concert series is being produced by Eliott Kahn, D.M.A. for the Old
Broadway Synagogue.
