when i was in school i heard from the great Rabbi Morton Leifman about
a hazzan from india, (b'nei yisrael,) who was on tour in the usa
informing about the rich and unknown culture of his people. someone
reportedly asked him to sing a hymn that they would know, and could
compare with the unique bnei yisrael culture.
he purportedly proceeded to sing adon olam to the tune silent night.
i always believed the story, and could well imagine an impressionable
indian jew hearing this great tune sung by a homesick british soldier.
