Re: Christmas music:
I love Bobby Helms' country classic, "Jinglebell Rock",
Elvis' bluesy "Merry Christmas, Baby"
and the awesome African Mass, "Misa Luba".
Perry Como, to me today, is the equivalent of audio valium.
He had songs on the charts when I was an immigrant kid in Toronto,
that I still remember: "Catch a Falling Star", "Find a Wheel".
His voice did have a wonderful sonorous quality, but he was not given
access to the first-rate matertial offered Sinatra, hence his excessive
mellowness often led to rot, unfortunately.
I personally have a little problem with "I'm-not-a-doctor,
but-I-play-one-on TV" singers; those who sing phonetically and cannot
fully understand what they are singing, not to mention being removed
from the culture...
They reduce language to mere "pitched mouth noise", in the words of
Frank Zappa (O"H). With "sacred" music, this is even more disturbing,
when you consider the content.
It is refreshing to learn that, with a <yeshiva> background, you can
be moved by Pavarotti's Christmas songs.
Have a <freylekhn khanike>.
