I believe Henry Sapoznik said that in "The Compleat Klezmer". It's there under 
"Tants Tants Yidelekh". I can't find my copy. Can somebody verify?

  Someone once told me it was also a popular French melody at the time....I've 
heard it referred to as the Hava Nagila of its day.
