A reliable source of information on U.S. copyright law is at the Library of
Congress site. The specific answer to your question is at
http://www.copyright.gov/faq.html#q46. For pre-1978 copyrights, it is 95
years from the date of the original copyright. Presently, copyright starts
when the work is created in a tangible form, but that may not have been the
rule in years past.
