String Instrument Transportation

My violin teacher gave me the same advice with the same explantion,
although I don't quite understand the physical phenomena involved.
I seem to recall that Bjorn Borg (or maybe it was Ivan Lendle, both of
whom had their tennis rackets strung very tightly) had the same
experience. Somehow the imagined sound of the tennis racket strings
popping while in flight has stayed with me.
