To be sure. But the instrument owe's its popularity to a line of virtuosos
whose playing
endeared and embedded itself into popular tastes and sensibilities:
Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Lester Young, Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan --
to name one branch.
