My friend hasn't got back to me yet, but I found a really interesting Yizkor 
book on the Jewish Genealogy web site.  It talks about "Jewish Gypsies" or 
music box people:

According to the book, they were itinerant people, mostly all related to one 
another, who lived like Gysies, played the hurdy gurdy, did magic tricks 
etc. but were Jewish.  I've never heard of them before.
