Re: "elevating" ("improving") folk music

Somehow, the idea that some college boys deem "serious" being somehow better
than "folk music" -- i.e. music that non-academic people make up for their
own use -- is kind of repugnant. In 200 yrs, when people want to get a fix
on what we were about, they're not going to look for Elliot Carter. They're
going to check out Public Enemy, Bob Dylan, and the Minutemen.

Charles Ives was right about "the music of the ages". It's not in trained
people giving us "pretty little notes". Rather, it belongs to people with
lives.
