Wolf's post got me thinking again that Jews are more likely to be
interested in writing about certain themes (e.g., exile, slavery) in
their music because of the Jewish historical experience and Hebrew
Scriptures.
These two themes in particular are shared with those (e.g., Africans
in the United States and in the Caribbean) who identify with these
themes in the Hebrew Scriptures (e.g., Jimmy Cliff's reggae By the
Rivers of Babylon and the spiritual Go Down Moses).
I'm sure that much has been written on this in the context of Jewish
political involvement in the civil rights movement (and Kossovo).
Although I don't know what the seminal article/work would be.
(Jonathan?) But is there any writing on the musical aspect? (Alex?
David?)
