All Yiddish book lovers know the following:
The place to buy any Yiddish book is not from the League of Yiddish, although
they annually have a book sale at the office. When they do have a sale, the
sale is fabulous. One can always be put on the mailing list and ask to be
notified when that is.
League for Yiddish, Inc., 200 West 72nd St., Suite 40,
New York, NY 10023-2824. (212) 787-6675. YidLeague (at) aol(dot)com
The Workmen's Circle has very, very few Yiddish language books for non-children
and if one special orders from them, they basically call up the CYCO bookstore
and forward you a copy from CYCO. They also have, or used to anyway, special
sales of used English and Yiddish books in the building about twice a year, and
those sales are also fabulous. Call or write them (WCFRIENDS (at)
aol(dot)com) to be notified about those sales.
If you can find a title among the used books from the National Yiddish Book
Center, then that's terrific. The likelihood of finding any particular
out-of-print title there, is very good. You can e-mail them (nzagorin (at)
bikher(dot)org) or call them (413-256-4900) or their 800 number.
But if you have a specific title, new or out-of-print and you want it very soon
or immediately, then all Yiddishists know that, unless it is a popular book,
the sure source is none of the above. The sure source of any Yiddish book in
the world is the CYCO book store. You can also write to a local publisher if
you know the publisher of a particular book and you want to go there to buy it,
e.g., the Zhitlowsky Foundation for Jewish Culture (212-243-1304).
Nevertheless, CYCO would still have all Yiddish titles by all publishers.
Here is the info.
CENTRAL YIDDISH CULTURE ORGANIZATION (CYCO) INC.
"CYCO" Publishing House and Book Distribution Center
ATRAN CENTER FOR JEWISH CULTURE
25 East 21st Street, New York, New York 10010
Telephone: (1-212) 505-8305 Telefax: (1-212) 505-8044
The office is open Tuesdays and Thursdays 10-3, but you can call anytime and
leave a message with your book request.
Which source will get a consumer the cheapest price during a non-sale? I
don't know.

Eli Katz' excellant bi-ligual edition of I.L.Peretz' Selected Stories contains
a story entitled "A
Nigun" in Yiddish and "The Metamorphoses of A Melody" which I think is the
story you are looking
for. The volume was published by The Zhitlowsky Foundation for Jewish Culture
in 1991. Contact
The League for Yiddish in NY to order it. Sorry, I don't have their address or
phone, but they
are in information. Perhaps Arbeter Ring has the volume.
