Eli Katz' excellant bi-ligual edition of I.L.Peretz' Selected Stories contains 
a story entitled "A 
Nigun" in Yiddish and "The Metamorphoses of A Melody" which I think is the 
story you are looking 
for.  The volume was published by The Zhitlowsky Foundation for Jewish Culture 
in 1991.  Contact 
The League for Yiddish in NY to order it.  Sorry, I don't have their address or 
phone, but they 
are in information.  Perhaps Arbeter Ring has the volume.
