Re: Budowitz, Klezmania, and Purim

Shalom, y'all. I'm new here and I want to thank Ari for starting the list. I
made a special folder for all the recent responses to the Jewish Film
question. I do spoken text performance that incorporates music, and on a
recent trip to San Francisco I was invited to weave a performance around
early silent cartoons and some early sound newsreels at a tiny alternative
film theater called The Total Mobile Home Cinema. It worked out well, and
since getting all this info on renting Jewish films I'm now considering
another similar performance built around such films.

In any case, the main reason I'm posting today is to pass along the
following:

At first I was curious why there wasn't a flood of responses from the list
until I realized it came in on music forum and not jewish-music, so many of
you may not have gotten it. I think it's all right to pass it along since the
only reason I got onto music forum was because an open invitation to do so
came in on _this_ list. There's also one response from someone on music forum
but I thought I'd toss out this rather platonically general thingy and see
what happened. If anyone wants to see the response I'll post it.

I'd also like to read what you all think about Ari's questions regarding the
avant-gardeness of reconstructing traditional arrangements (I know I'm
probably oversimplifying or maybe even misinterpreting Ari's thingy). I have
my own opinions, but I thought I'd start with this and feel out the climate
on conceptual thingies, since all I've seen so far is purely factual
thingies. You'll notice I write "thingies" a lot. It helps me speed through
email responses, it's just one of my idiosycratic thingies.

By the way, has anyone heard Kletka Red? I saw it in a record store in
Berkeley but didn't have enough money to buy it. I guess I could go to the
page and see if Ari reviewed it, but my browser strains my puny memory, so
forgive me for using the list as an advance scout type thingy.

Look, I promise not to write "thingy" so much in the future. I was kind of
making a self-depricating thingy out of it to try to make a charming entrance
onto the list. Now looking back I can't imagine why I thought it would
accomplish that. Oh well. The unexamined life may not be worth living, but
that doesn't mean you have to _do_ anything about it, right?
