<Lynn, I understand your frustration. (I feel your pain?)>
Begging your pardon, if you have not walked in my shoes you don't know shinola
about my pain.
<However, just because your beliefs don't jive with theirs is not a reason to
condemn them, is it?>
I tolerate their beliefs. I don't have to like 'em, agree with 'em or
participate in 'em. Any more than I have to like 2000 years of stupidity by
the all male leadership of the Roman Catholic church which brought us such
goodies as the Children's Crusades and the Inquisition.
<Do you realize that one very real reason for a mechitzah is NOT to
discriminate against women?>
This is a bunch of stuff. ANYTIME an all-male group says to a group of women
"This is for your own good" WE have no problem understanding EXACTLY what is
meant.
<We were always told it was due to the weakness of men, who are unable to
think about anything for more than two minutes without straying back to sex.
Who am I to argue? In some synagogues, I have seen women with such hot
outfits that I concentrated on nothing else during the two hours I was there.
And I am certain that many men are also as "weak" as I am in overcoming our
animal instincts.>
When are men going to stand up, take responsibility for their actions and
realize that they are human beings NOT animals? Will you ALWAYS need some way
to excuse the drooling, leering etc. Why should women have to sit away from
you so you can keep your mind on G-d. Seems to me that G-d is really playing
second banana to any bimbo who walks by you!
The Mishnah in Pirkei Avot (Sayings of
the Fathers) says "Who is strong? He who can overcome his evil inclinations!"
Obviously, the need for a mechitzah acknowledges that we inferior men have yet
to learn to conquer these urges.
Therefore, Lynn, be not offended!
I am strong and I am offended.
