This is my experience as well. We will have to see what happens as this
generation of Ashkenazi trained Sephardi Rabbis comes to power. Also
interesting is the way in which minhag holds more power in the Sephardi
community that the kind of theoretical halachic analysis which has started to
supersede minhag in the Ashkenazic community.
