One of the things he could study are the similarities /
differences between the system of maqamat (Middle
Eastern music) and the system of staygers (Jewish
music).
Maqamat:

Staygers:

"Maqam Hijaz"
http://www.maqamworld.com/maqamat/hijaz.html
is for example roughly similar to the "Ahavoh Rabboh
stayger." There are also a number of structural
similarities between the systems. I believe that Hanoch
Avenary has written some useful remarks about this
subject.
