Have you tried contacting Zalmon Mlotek. Several years ago, I attended a 
great workshop he led on the topic of Yiddish art songs  which included 
some discussion of Gelbart's work. I don't offhand remember how much 
biographical info there was.  (Unfortunately, I have no idea where my notes 
are on this so I can't help you out. Sorry)
