Jewish Encyclopedia Online

I've just become aware of a new, very useful resource.

The 12-volume Jewish Encyclopedia from 1906 has been
put online. As the website itself notes, this
encyclopedia is of course quite dated.

"Since the original work was completed almost 100 years
ago, it does not cover a significant portion of modern
Jewish History (e.g., the creation of Israel, the
Holocaust, etc)."

Still it contains a lot of useful information on Jewish
culture and religion that's now available at the press
of a button.

The main page of the site is:
http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/

I found an article on "synagogal music":
http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/view.jsp?artid=1022&letter=M

and quite a lot of entries on individual chazzanim and
composers that played an important role in the 19th
century. Especially interesting are pointers to
articles in scientific magazines and newspapers of that
time... this will give me a lot to research!
