Jeremy's suggestions are good; also I suggest:

1) Replace Windows machine with a Mac (which typically have no
virus problems).

2) Whichever OS you're using, get mail filtering software that allows you to
preview and delete mail on the server before downloading. Some of the
filtering software is freeware, in any case you can get good programs for
$25 or less. No more spam or viruses reach your hard drive.
