RE: Music and "politics"



To me this "thread" ties itself into knots as I consider what Plato said
-- as I recall it was in The Republic -- (someone help me out here?)
about the power of words set to rhythmic music to convey a message.
Music not only reflects a culture, but can be a force in shaping it as
well.  I don't know that the people who sent antisemitic messages about
the Yiddish Radio series were necessarily aware of this -- at least not
at a conscious level -- but perhaps a deeper awareness of this power of
music -- and especially song -- is what arouses fears of music perceived
to be that of "others" -- whether those "others" be of another religion,
nationality, or even age group.]

This thread has actually become one of the most interesting ones I've
seen on this list in a long time and its highly civilized at this point.
Perhaps the answer is to remove people from the list who are incapable
of civilized discourse.  These people appear from time to time and not
necessarily in discussions related to politics.
