Thanks very much, Animatrixie.
I invite you to come up here to Rainland (uh, Seattle) on November 17, when
Alex and I will be presenting an entire concert of violin and cimbalom
music, as part of the Belle Arte concert series.
(But hey! our duo is available for concerts in other cities; our specialty
is southern Romanian muzica lautareasca, or gypsy music, but we also play
music from the rest of Romania, and also Hungarian and Jewish music, and
more. Oh, and I am also available separately to play klezmer music with some
top-flight musicians. Serious inquiries from concert presenters are more
than welcome. Thanks for letting me slip that in... :-)))))
As for the (Hungarian) tune you asked about, alas, "Sarga Kutya" or "Yellow
Dog" is the tune on "Little Blackbird" (track 18) about which I know the
least. I actually learned it from Alex, and he can't remember where he
learned it himself, it was so long ago. My attempts to find references to it
or to find a Hungarian who knows it have so far come to naught. If nothing
else, I'd like to know how such a lovely tune comes by such an odd title! If
anyone has any information, I'd certainly be interested in learning more
myself.
In any case, we'll be playing "Yellow Dog" this Saturday.
Sandra
