I think Steve Lawrence is the most underated singer today. He has a fantastic
voice and unbeleivable control. His father was a Cantor. Have you ever heard
his version of "Where Can I Go" sung in Yiddish and English? Still get many
requests for this song though it's been out of print for years.
Too bad he is "considered" a lounge singer. In the 50's he was a "pop" singer
and had some great Rock & Roll hits. He had a huge hit with "Party Doll" the
Buddy Knox song as well as "Footsteps" (written for him by the great Teddy
Rendazzo), "Pretty Blue Eyes" "Portrait of My Love", and MANY more.
Ironically, his biggest hit "Go Away Little Girl" was my least favorite. He
made some fantastic records..including a fine Spanish Lp for the Latin market.
I'll bet that if he did a Jewish Cd it would sell at least 100,000 units.
