Re: Israeli Music Publications Limited

Sophia,

I'll tell you if I find out that Braun's book is still available. It
does look like an interesting work. As you surmised, Braun's book
includes substantial material on Jewish Elements in music by
non-Jewish composers such as Shostakovich and Prokofiev.

I don't know if there is any similar work of Jews and Jewish Elements
in American Music. As to American songs written by Jews, George
Gershwin, Jule Styne, Jerry Herman, Bob Dylan, and, of course, Sheldon
Harnick & Jerry Bock occasionally included some Jewish elements in
their songs, but I don't know that the same can be said (much) of
others such as Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, Harold Arlen, Lieber &
Stoller, and Stephen Sondheim, although some other list members might
comment. I can think of a couple of examples, but not many. I
imagine that some of the members of the list (Robert, Seth, George,
Simon, Wolf, others?) could write such a book together, or alone -- at
least as to popular works.

Bob
