Oh dear. It must be bad for the habitually cheerful-sounding Judith
to send a grumpy message.
As read from over here, it was abundantly clear that the offender
was an unwitting one, and that he meant to praise
Judith, not to offend her. But this is the second time in only a few
days that the subject of a bona fide recommendation comes on list to
express mixed feelings (less mixed in Judith's case) at being
recommended without consultation. Right, Josh was only joking, but
there is a point here (besides the copyright issue which has
just been raised).
While it would be sad if no-one dared to blow anyone else's trumpet
for fear of reprimand, perhaps the principle of asking the author (or
knowledge-holder) first would be a sound one.
The funny things is, but for George's exact reference some of us
would not have known about Judith's article. And, before that, I seem
to remember we did get lots of wisdom from Josh as a result of
someone else offering it. So it works! How perverse.
In my humble opinion, any amount of referring or prompting is good,
so long as the referred or promptee remains in control of his or her
contribution.
