Ari,
Maybe I'm having a bad day, but I don't understand what you wrote.
That is, it seems that I don't understand the contents of what you
wrote. And I read it several times. So I'm not sure whether I agree
or disagree with your position. Since I'm not sure what it is.
Are you suggesting that these postings in any way advance our
discussion of Jewish music? I've studied Talmud and write philosophy,
but I cannot understand how that would be so. And if the postings
have nothing to do with Jewish music, why are we finding them in our
mailboxes?
Your comment "if there are problems with people on the list, they will
be handled via private e-mail" suggests that you don't perceive there
to be a problem with this person since their repeated postings show
that the situation has not been "handled".
The problem is not so much with the mode of expression, but with the
content of the messages. Would you knowingly send viruses to our
computers?
Your reference to censorship suggests that this is a First Amendment
issue (another topic on which I have written). It is not. I too
favor a free marketplace of ideas, even when not constitutionally
required, but these ideas are in the wrong market. It does not seem
to me to be a question upon which reasonable people may differ; in
other words, a no-brainer. These posts are not even tangentially
relevant to the theme that has brought us together.
People pick and choose what to do with their time (e.g., what to
read). It seems that members of this list would like you to act on
their behalf in this instance.
Are you hesitant to act without a consensus of list members as to what
to do? If so, ask for one. I, for one, do not ask for a public stand
from you. If you privately block such inappropriate messages, that
would be fine with me.
Is there a technical problem in dealing with such postings? (Clearly
I'm no computer geek.) If so, tell us.
I hope that I have, at least in part, understood and responded to your
comments.
I have a great deal of respect for your time and for the time of the
other members of the list, but the repeated postings and your public
response make this a public issue.
I apologize for this divergence from discussing Jewish music.
Sincerely,
Bob
