Ironically, I've been away from the list for a week due to some incredible
immersion in "Jewish" dancing from Bessarabia (thanks to Michael Alpert and
the Kagansky family ((now from Toronto)), who were all part of our Intensive
Klezmer Workshop at the College Music Society Intercultural Institute, held
at New England Conservatory). What a rich and underappreciated source of
Jewish enrichment (and as several of you have pointed out, also available
from older Americans who go back far enough to remember real Jewish parties)!
The point really hit home when, the night after our final blowout I found
myself at our local town-wide Jewish-music night, and when a respectable
local simkhe band launched into a medly of Hassidic wedding favorites (I
realize it would be a stretch to expect actual freylekhs) the crowd could
barely get a hora going.
Wow, do we have work to do! --Hankus
