I would have to disagree.
To me, it is largely a question of promotion -- educating the public and
exposing
"unknown" artists.
That, and the ability to deliver, of course.

Forget the star system model.It is antiquated, hierarchical and destructive to
everyone.
If the music goes over, the artist is a star.

Contemporary audiences, especially the all-important youth market,
demand high-energy and theatrical shows.  This does not mean a bunch of people
in
thrift store fedoras and wide ties playing <kale bazetsns> or <doinas>, which
tend to have the effect of a valium on most people.  You have to be able to
compete with the best of rock and roll and world music.

Unfortunately, young audiences practically have to be bludgeoned with
volume and stage effects to be won over today.

Think of it as a challenge.
