I have been involved (though VERY peripherally) with this project for 4 or 5
months.
I'm not saying that it was due to my suggestion, but I had recommended
Leonard Nemoy for a number of reasons.
His evolvement with Yiddish is extensive and has been associated with such
projects as the 1st Los Angeles Yiddish festival,"Yiddishkayt" where he sang
Yiddish folk songs with a klezmer band (possibly Yale Storm). He has been
involved with various projects with The Western Wind Ensemble as well the
"Yiddish Short Stories From Europe" project from The National Yiddish Book
Center.

Mayer is absolutely correct when he says "The best case scenario is to create
a broad based program that will cater to masses....A high profile and highly
identified jewish personality will do quite a bit to attract a wide listening
audience."
Whether it's for his Jewish projects or his Dr. Spock character, Nemoy is
very well known and I can honestly tell you he is one heck of a nice guy, a
real "mentch" in every sense of the word.

He has been at Hatikvah a number of times as has his son Adam, a very
successful T.V producer and they have a very strong attachment to Yiddish
music and films. Though he had never performed in Yiddish Theater, he said
that his mentor was the great Yiddish actor/singer, Maurice Schwartz.
