As it turns out there's an article that should be of interest to those into
Persian dance:

Anthony Shay.  "Dance and Non-Dance: Patterned Movement in Iran and Islam"
in Iranian Studies, vol 28 #1-2, W/S, 1995.

I've been meaning to try and contact this professor.  If dance is your
thing (as it is mine) then this is THE article to read.
