These matronymics are purely Yiddish. They all consist of a Yiddish
woman's first name and the suffix -kin (from Yiddish "kind," child.
Dear I-L
How about the matronymic Sirkish as in Rabbi Joel Sirkish -
wheer the Sir is from Soro and the ish is the (Yidish) suffix?
or the patrnomyic Isseles where Isser is the father's name and les is
the suffix? Why aren't they
SirKIND
and
IsserKIND?
coudn't the kin suffix be Russian and not necessarily Yiddish
Rich Wolpoe
_________
Rich,
I didn't say -kin was the ONLY Yiddish suffix on matronymics.
Isseles or Isserles belongs to another group where the name is formed
on the possessive case of a woman's name. There are many examples:
(Oh, yes, you're right, some are formed off a man's name, like Isser --
but most are women's names:)
Goldis... from Golda
Pereles... from Perel
Beilis... from Beyle
Gitlis... from Gitl
Mireles... from Mirele
Yachnes... from yachne
and so on.

Yes, if it was a Slavic stem ending in -k, plus ending -in. But the great
majority are Yiddish name + Yiddish suffix -kin.
