Thanks!  I had supposed the secular/observant rift to be a post-war
phenomenon, stemming from the political secularization of eastern Europe and
the loss of so many observant to the Holocaust.

Laughing at myself a little, I just reflected that the Christian community
probably has a much bigger fraction who are non-observant.  But we don't even
have an adjective for it!
