I've always thought of the various tropes as the oldest and "purest" Jewish
music. When I was an undergraduate composer, experimenting with obvious
reference to these materials, I had a teacher who asked what the reference
was about, and when he learned that it was Jewish chant, tried to suggest
that I make reference to Bloch's Schlomo---because that secondary source
was the only such music he was aware of. It turns out my tendancies are
towards serialism and fugue, and I have my own way of incorporating
Judaica into my music that is quite different from Bloch's.
But I've always thought the use of Klezmerkeit in the 4th movement of
Mahler's 1st symphony a special treat.
