But most of his [steve reich's] music is written for his own group
of percussionists-plus (drummers-plus-winds, drummers-plus-piccolo,
drummers-plus-strings, drummers-plus-organs, etc.). Whether his stuff
counts as gamelan style would be a question I'd take up with pro
gamelanists, I guess.
well, i was careful not to claim that it actually was "gamelan style"
--i've never studied either reich's music or gamelan music from a formal,
analytic point of view.
but i do think he drew some inspiration from gamelan music for some
of his pieces, for example "music for 18 musicians" or "six pianos".
maybe i'm drawing too close a comparison -- reich's melodies use
western tonality. however, they are based on steady repeating notes
and short melodic phrases, not unlike some gamelan music i've heard.
that's all.
regards,
peter
