[HANASHIR:15707] RE: More Software and technical questions

Ilana:

It's the portability that becomes the issue. MDs are portable, but they
cannot make direct digital transfers to your PC. What you need is a portable
device that records in a format than can be directly copied/transferred to
the CD. These are not inexpensive, and there aren't many f them in the lower
end(I,e, under $1000.00)

Marantz has replaced their venerable old PMD 680 portable cassette recorder,
which, for years, was the standard of field production recording for
journalists, with the new all-digital PMD670. You can transfer the recorded
files to the PC, where they can then be edited with almost any digital
editor. It records on either proprietary cards to compact flash. Street
price around $700.

Michael recently reported on his new Pogo Ripflash recorder. While I don't
think it has the high audio fidelity capabilities of the Marantz, it might
be worth considering if you're not planning to press professional CDs from
your recordings.

If you have a laptop equipped with a fast processor and lots of hard-drive
space (or an attached stand alone hard drive with fast USB2 or Firewire xfer
speeds, a decent sound card, microphone, and decent audio software, you can
simply record direct to your laptop. In fact, many people are doing this
nowadays, and it is quickly becoming on of the most popular ways. However,
it's a bit bulky compared to some form of portable recorder which you can
later transfer recorded files to your PC. I expect that market will expand
soon, but for now your choices and options are limited.

Yes, there are many PDAs and MP3 player that have limited recording
capabilities, but they are really designed just for voice notes.

Andy, you and Adrian are helping me confirm what I
have been learning the past few days, many thanks to
both of you. Please excuse my lack of proper technical
naming language usage.
A quick question: when you say "RECORD from MD to PC"
do you mean record from a pre-recorded mini-disc (like something I've
brought back from Hava Nashira for example), or do you mean I need to use
the MD as the recording device while directly connected to the PC?
Sound Recorder works with my MD but I would like
something more sophisticated.
I am searching for portability, as well as for being
able to record, file, burn, and print from my own
office.
The sheet music I will want to print is often complex
with multi-staves, as I am arranging music for voices
and instruments together.
Thanks again, Ilana
