Here is what I had sent to Noah:
Some ideas:
1) Often state arts councils will give money to individual artists for
projects or undesignated things to perpetuate their art. I recently received a
$500 artist grant from my state arts council to further the work that I do. It
is not enough for a recording, but it will help me go to the Biennial for
instance. Our state arts council also gives $5000 Fellowships to artists who
apply and receive these awards to do whatever they wish with.
2) One of our colleagues, Dean Friedman, actually tried something very
innovative recently. He put out a call to all of his fans and friends and
asked them to "bid" on autographed copies of his new (yet to be recorded) CD.
Fans and friends made pledges and he had prizes to the highest bidder. Highest
bidder, I think bid $1000 and will receive the very first CD hot off the press
personally autographed with a photo, etc..... He says he raised over $15,000
this way. So people were actually pledging an amount in advance of the CD.
When the CD is finished all who pledged will get an autographed copy for their
pledge.
3) Find some "sugar daddies" -- people in congregations, federations, schools
who believe in what you do who are willing to make a contribution toward a new
project. Also, try finding someone who wants to dedicate something to someone
or a some cause -- I think Steve Dropkin financed one of his recordings through
the generosity of a family who made a donation so that the recording would be
dedicated to the memory of their son who loved music.
4) Try bartering time with a studio. Maybe you have something that you can
offer them in exchange for studio time -- playing for other projects, etc.
Perhaps they will work out a payment plan with you so that you do not have to
pay all of it up front.
Hope some of this is helpful.
Judy :)

I agree that this might be a good list topic.
Several people have responded to me privately, mostly wanting to know more
details.
I think some of the discussion will contain some good, general information.
And some of it will be based on my, or other artists looking to do the same,
specific plans. Much of making a go in the recording industry, or any arts
related field, is networking, making contacts.
I'll be happy to share any information that may be useful to others, but,
obviously, I shouldn't think it appropriate to share specific and private
negotiations with the list.
Judy Ginsburg, business person extraordinaire, sent me some extremely useful
suggestions which I suggest she share with the list. Or I will share them, with
her permission.
Looking forward to a lively and informative list discussion.
(Sorry. Forgot to use my full "signature" last time.)
