Re: Verdi and the Sefardim

Dear Irwin,
Thank you for the info. You know, the more I delve into this subject of
"Jewish Music' the broader the subject seems to be. I teach a class on
'Jewish Music' and the first piece I play is the second movement of the
Mozart K.364. I ask 'is that Jewish music?' and all who are not familiar
with Mozart say yes. I follow with the Mahler 1st and of course Thats
jewish music.. I then play a recording of the monks at Mt Athos and that,
too is Jewish music.. I also say that sometimes its the soul of the music
that might be Jewish. The most awesome moment in a synagogue for me is the
incantation of Hineni. I then play the opening of the Sibelius Violin
Concerto. And every time I hear it, it 'sounds' like Hineni.
I discovered another piece this week. An American Composer, Mrs. H.H.A.
Beach. Her 2d symphony. I caught on the radio after the title was announced
and was sure that it had a Jewish connection - especially the cello solo in
the slow movement. It turns out that its sub title is the Gallic symphony.
Its inspiration is Irish! You never know where you will find 'Jewish Music'
as ever. eddie eisen
